Yes, there is a such thing as “black” cocoa butter- it looks and smells like dark chocolate (see third photo). It naturally has a cocoa scent (but a bit of chocolate, hot cocoa or chocolate chip cookies fragrance (all synthetic, but skin safe fragrances) can be added if you like to make it REALLY chocolatey- simply request it in the drop-down menu). Note: Cafe Mocha fragrance will contain some coffee essential oil. Natural/Unscented is 100% natural, scented is 97-98% natural.
It can be used as both a hair and body butter. It may also be used as an occasional hair mask (only a small amount is needed). Grainy Butter
Products containing shea butter can sometimes become grainy. This is due to exposure to extreme temperatures during shipping and can especially be an issue during the hot summer months. Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid this unless butters are shipped via refrigeration which can be upwards of $30 extra.
FIX: The product can be smoothed out if decanted into a glass container set in a pot with a low level of boiling water or the top of double boiler and gently reheated until totally melted. Do not allow product to get too hot or boiling, and do not allow any water to get into the butter (water can lead to mold/bacteria). You want to watch closely to make sure all the grains have melted and take it off the heat immediaitely when they have. Do not expose product to direct heat or place in microwave. After fully melted, decant into jar (if heated as directed, it should not melt the plastic at all) put the top on the jar and place into freezer until solid. Remove from freezer and allow to return to room temperature and product should be smooth again.
